[ARCHIVED] Copper Update - Source Water Tests Show No Elevated Levels

Town of Wellington Logo

Recently, Poudre School District (PSD) discovered elevated levels of copper from fixtures within two Wellington schools. The Town of Wellington is committed to providing safe water for our community and quickly partnered with PSD and Larimer County Department of Health to create an action plan.

Samples from the distribution lines that serve Wellington Middle High School were tested by two State of Colorado-certified labs, Weld County Department of Health and Environment and Colorado Analytical. Test results confirm Town of Wellington water does not contain elevated levels of copper; all agencies agree source water is not the cause of elevated levels in the school. As a precautionary measure, samples from the town’s distribution line serving Rice and Eyestone Elementary have also been taken. Results are expected to be available at the end of next week.

Test results from the distribution system are available from both labs and can be viewed with the link below:

We are proud to report we have never had a copper exceedance. The Town of Wellington is required to regularly test drinking water in accordance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of Colorado regulations. Our utility was required to begin biannual lead and copper testing in 2017.

In 2022, the Town of Wellington completed over 6,700 additional water quality tests to ensure our water's safety. Wellington's water met all state and federal drinking water health standards, which are the primary standards for treating and monitoring water.

The State mandated Town of Wellington Drinking Water Quality Report is delivered to all customers annually. Current and historical reports are available at:

The Town of Wellington has received several questions and understands the concerns this situation raises. Answers to frequently asked questions are provided by Larimer County Health Department and are available at:  www.larimer.gov/copper
